I had an “epic ride” this week in which I encountered a ”distracted driver” and got so angry I nearly called him a ”douche.” What’s wrong with this sentence? On its face, it’s hard to judge. But in the ever-colorful and changing parlance of cycling-speak, it can serve as Exhibit A of how words and phrases are losing their meaning — or have outlived their initial shock and effect. Who are the violators? Mainstream media. Social media (us). The barista. The neighbor. Everyone. Here’s my early short list with actual meanings I associate today upon hearing or reading (Warning – could change tomorrow): Distracted driver = Irresponsible, undisciplined, selfish.
